Amnesia is the new game from those guys who made one of the scariest games ever, Penumbra. I have never played Penumbra, but Amnesia was released recently with a demo, so hey, why not.
I got stuck in the demo. I couldn't figure out where to go! There were two doors I hadn't gone through, and I couldn't open either of them. Eventually, I ran out of lantern oil and gave up. I didn't even get to any enemies.
Well. So much for that. I really cannot play games without minimaps.
I got into the open beta! Man, character creation was fun. The graphics are gorgeous, but I'm concerned with how few FPS I'm getting. This is a computer that handles Crysis on High settings. It should be able to run an MMO smooth as butter.
It is more user-friendly than FFXI (which... isn't saying much lol). It still pretty much throws you into the deep end. You get into your first battle with no preamble and after that, you're given a name and place on your unweildly map.
I did not get much farther than that. I understand that the idea is to explore and find things out for yourself, but I just don't have time for that. I wonder if SE understands this, and doesn't care. Obviously, because of their claims of making FFXIV more accessible, they were not happy with FFXI's rather meager number of players. The thing is though, as much as people complain about WoW holding your hand too much, that is what makes it possible for people with busy schedules to play the game. I mean, I've had to drop out of WoW for the time being. Am I going to be playing FFXIV which requires more time and effort? Hell no. I suppose they will pick up everyone who played WoW and found it lacking, but are there really that many people like that?
It's unfortunate, because I much prefer the world of FFXIV to the world of WoW. And I would so love to play. But I would basically have to cut out every other hobby I have to make time for it, and even then... Well, it's just not going to happen.
"Persuant to the above, beware of majority privilege. It's very easy for people who don't have an issue that the minority feel (and this applies to race and gender-- in gaming, particularly-- as well as to sexual orientation) to believe that something is "not a problem". "I don't see why you're so uptight about it!" Realize when you make these sorts of comments that you have no idea what you're talking about, for all our sakes. You don't know what it feels like to be marginalized, and it behooves those in the majority to use at least a modicum of sensitivity when it comes to addressing such issues. No, games aren't a platform for social change, but that doesn't mean we are also absent of responsibility when we include content in our games where such issues can arise. If we were to claim "majority privilege" as our only guide, we do nothing but add to the problem."
I guess I should post about my MacBook Pro and how awesome it is.
IT'S REALLY AWESOME.
I sprung for the hi-def screen upgrade and it was worth it. Everything is so gorgeous and sharp.
Also it came in two days early on one of my sleep in days and I had to sign for it in my PJs. This is made even worse by the fact that my free iPod Touch had come in a few days earlier and I had chatted with the same delivery guy for a while. So he knew me. :(
But I am so loving my MacBook. ♥ Makes it a lot easier to fill the time between classes when I don't have to fight for a free computer in the library.
OTHER THINGS:
I saw Scott Pilgrim. It was okay. Would have been better with a bit less fighting.
I played Persona 4 to about... well, right after Naoto's dungeon. IDK, I got tired of it. FORTUNATELY, I think I should be able to just pick up where I left off next time I'm in the mood for it, so yay! Hopefully someday I will beat it.
Now I'm playing Final Fantasy XII. Again. I've played through the first 3 hours about a thousand times, ugh.
