The Resistance

So this is kind of an album review. I got into Muse with Absolution, and it's still my favorite album of theirs that I've heard. I also liked Black Holes and Revelations, but not quite as much. Basically, the more Muse aims for the grandiose and over-dramatic, the less I enjoy them. I always enjoy the music itself, but sometimes I find the lyrics cringe-worthy. (Note that I haven't listened to anything before Absolution. I'm a bad fan. :x)
I'm overall pretty "eeehhhh" on The Resistance. Far to many lyrics give me second-hand embarassment. The one thing I dislike about the instruments is that there is far too much orchestra and far too little guitar. Muse has always done songs with orchestras, but they've been done sparingly. When it's suddenly almost the whole album, it gets tiresome. This is the first Muse album where I've thought the single was better than the other songs.
Uprising - My favorite song off the album. It's a lot closer to what they've done before than the songs that follow it. It sounds like it coud have been on BH&R. It's the Muse I know and love.
The Resistance - The lyrics are corny, but this is normal levels for Muse. We're still sounding good here. I loooove the vocals on this song.
Undisclosed Desires - I loathe the lyrics of this song. The chorus is especially intolerable. There's a limit to how much ridiculousness I can take, and this song just sails right over it. The music is fairly good, though. It's certainly catchy.
United States of Eurasia - Another song that sounds like old!Muse... up until the end. And I like it... up until the end. Then it feels like they're channelling Queen a bit too hard. I just skip to the next song before I hit the end. :/
Guiding Light - Weakest song on the album, hands down. Reminds me of Invicible from BH&R, which I found to be similarly boring and schmoopy.
Unnatural Selection - My other favorite song on the album! It's way over-dramatic, but the fast pace and bite it has makes it thrilling instead of silly. It's just a fantastic song all around.
MK Ultra - I'm neutral on this song. Nothing stands out about it. It's fine to listen to, but I often forget it when I try to list the tracks on this album in my head. It's better than being a bad song, though.
That French Track - I like it! Not much to say since it's short, but it's enjoyable.
Exogenesis - This is actually divided into three tracks, but I'll combine my feelings on them all. I do like Exogenesis. It's an epic, and I can see why they divided it. Each track has a distinctly different feel, going from ponderous and melancholy, to dramatic and excited, to calm and optimistic. However, I think it would have benefited from being trimmed a bit and combined into one track.
